Update: According to the FAQ, the only way to save your character is to do a screen snapshot. On Windows, use either <print screen> (entire screen); or <alt><print screen> (selected window), then open a painting application to paste the screen snapshot from the clipboard. On a mac, use either <apple><shift><3> for a snapshot of the entire screen, or <apple><shift><4> for a snapshot of only the selected area (you'll get crosshairs after the key sequence).
