Good Day!

Today was a good day. :) At work, I figured out how to do something that's had me stumped for a little bit, and it's before the deadline for the initial prototype, so that's even better. Then, tonight was the first night back at the art club for fall. :) I decided to start a silk painting design I've had percolating in the back of my head for a while:

(I do the outlines on the computer, where I can fiddle with the curves to my heart's content.) Can you tell what it is? If you can't, do you want me to tell you, or do you want to keep guessing while it progresses?

New Mittens

Another thing I'm feeling unreasonably pleased about:


This pair of mittens I just finished. Crochet top, knit ribbed cuffs. These are now the light mittens that live in my spring/fall/rain jacket, for those cool, would-be-nice-to-be-wearing-mittens days. (My old pair is probably around ten years old now, and is getting thin. I've already patched them once using yarn that I begged off someone with some in their stash. I feel guilty about begging for more. They're pre- "save leftovers for patching" mittens.)

Garden

I took this photo of my garden on Saturday:

It's probably looking rather whiter and fluffier now.

The cardboard is where I stood while planting my garlic, so that I didn't sink (as much) into the mud. The area between the cardboard and railroad tie is planted with two rows of garlic and/or onions, plus one row of random perennials (next to the tie) from a neighbour. The part starting just past the cardboard still needs to be dug. Looks like that will be spring, now. ;)

Things That Could Be Better

My router doesn't want to renew it's DHCP lease, and so I'm tethered to a wire. I called my provider when the internet was flaky (I couldn't connect via wired either), got put on hold, and then was *finally* given the option to have a call back. Two *hours* later when they did call back, I could connect when wired, but was busy with other stuff and so didn't play with it enough to figure out that wireless still wasn't working. Perhaps I'll have time to play with it this weekend.

I'm tired... but I need to finish stuff before I can sleep.

Fall rain is gloomy. (Hmmm... I think this calls for hot chocolate.)

Snow Photos

Here's how the snow looked at 11 am when a call for my neighbour woke me up. (I've asked her now to arrange for people to stop calling her on my phone. I need my weekend mornings to catch up on sleep I'm not getting during the week. I didn't say that bit, but I think she gathered it from my dishevelled look and grumpy demeanour.)

The snow had been melting for a while when I took these photos... last night even the streets were covered, and the snow was thicker. There's less now than was in these photos. Although this snow probably won't stick around until real winter sets in, it also won't be long before real winter sets in. *sigh*

WTF?!?

Uh, wasn't it summer weather a week or so ago? What is this white stuff I see?

Didn't they say that we'd have a mild fall and early winter, through January???

1. Looks like I don't need to worry about gardening chores again until, oh... May? (Even if this snow doesn't stick, dealing with wet and/or frozen gumbo is a recipe for broken tools.)

2. There's a lot more white stuff out there now, but the sun has long since set.

3. I don't think I needed to water mom's hanging planters yesterday. (They looked pretty much ready to compost today.)

The Heat Is On

Literally. The radiators started gurgling earlier tonight, and they felt warm when I touched them. Hopefully this'll help with my knee. (Stoopid arthritis!)

Speaking of the seasons changing, Sara is having a give-away of crocheted snowflakes to the first 15 people who sign up. :) She loves having blog hits and comments, so go say hi! (And recently she's been having contests for yarn! I won two skeins of sock yarn!!!)

Finally, to those locals who may have been wondering, I will be hosting a Christmas swap again this year. I'll post to Ravelry... hopefully soon. (But not tonight, I need sleep. The only reason I made it to this late is because of the naps I've been having all day.)

Changing Leaves

I looked out my window a few minutes ago to discover that the leaves have now changed in my neighbourhood. I don't think they were this way yesterday! ...Of course, yesterday was long enough that I don't think I looked out my windows... I left early while half-asleep, then arrived home late and dead tired.

While deciding on which way to point my camera, I also noticed that my windows are filthy. The question is... clean them now, only to have them completely frost over in a month, or clean them in the spring when I'll be able to see out of them? ;)

Here's a glimpse of today's wacky weather (through dirty windows that make it really difficult to take photos of the weather). This squall lasted about five minutes at most.

A Very Winnipeg Halloween

I like to tell people that we have a 50% chance of snow for halloween. (Many people living in warmer climates don't belive me.) Now, normally I mean we have a 50% chance of snow falling before halloween, but this year we have 50% snow today. As in some moments there's no precipitation, other moments there's white stuff in the air, and at yet others there's rain. (Probably a very cold rain, but I've been lucky enough so far today that I've only been out when there's nothing falling from the sky.) I suppose, if I were to be accurate, it's more like 5% than 50%, but it's more fun to say 50%. ;)

I'm really glad I got all that gardening done yesterday. I still have some more to do, plus some bulbs that need replanting, but I won't feel so bad if I only lose half of the lilies, since half are already in the ground. Or perhaps I can "force" them and the best of the tulips and daffodils, and then plant them in the spring? The rest of the perennials can be transplanted from the tomato garden (where I plopped them temporarily) to the front garden in the spring, and I can do the rest of the digging then too if necessary. But weather is supposed to be dry on Saturday, so I *should* be able to finish up then... assuming the ground isn't saturated.

Speaking of snow and halloween, one thing about growing up in Winnipeg is that you always had to design your halloween costume with your snowsuit in mind: you'll very likely be wearing it, either under or over your costume. ;)

Kids from the neighbourhood were selling pumkins, so I bought one. It was only $1 for the small ones (or $2 for the large, but I don't think any of them were particularly large).

It's absolutely adorable!

I think I'll give it to H, though, since I'm not really in the mood for carving this year.

Hee! The portion of the tree that didn't have as many berries also seems to be on a different timeline for fall. This fellow definitely doesn't want to fall in line with the crowd. ;)
