S came over on Friday night, and we were going to watch a movie. S decided she'd like to learn to crochet, since I kept offering to teach her. So I started teaching her. I taught her to chain, and then how to do the first row. Well, I should say I showed her how it was done, and then she kept attempting and ripping out until she was able to get a gauge that didn't strangle the hook. That was about all that happened Friday night. We put the movie on (POTC), but she wan't able to watch and crochet at the same time (obviously, since she's just learning), so she didn't see much of the movie. Since it was my own copy, I sent it home with her when I kicked her out at 10. We would have kept going, but I was being picked up at 7:15 the next morning to go to the Candidates Day women's breakfast. I needed to get to bed. She understood.
Saturday morning, she sends me the following in an e-mail:
It's remotely possible I'll be interested in getting together this evening, if you have time. I'm finding myself having obsessive thoughts about crocheting, and musing how it's akin to sailors and boy scouts tying knots. If you're interested, e-mail/call me when you get home.
Mwua-ha-ha! (=evil cackle)
So, when I was back from my errands, she came over and we continued. :) She finally got the hang of chaining and the first row, so I showed her how the second and subsequent rows worked. There was some struggle here too, but by the end of another movie (which she didn't see), S had accomplished this:
She didn't really like the results, but I thought it was pretty decent for a first attempt. She wishes to remain anonymous, but is wondering what other crocheters think of her first attempt. I'll pass on any comments you feel like leaving.
Finally, since she is also a very mathematical type of person, I explained to her the basic concept behind more complicated crochet, and our discussion looked a bit like this:
I'll write up my explanation in a separate post. Note to mathaphobics: don't worry, be happy. Pretend that post doesn't exist, and that there is nothing whatsoever mathematical about crochet. You will be happier, and your work will continue to be just fine.
Aside: this is what caused the demise of my wrist. Both Friday night and Saturday I worked on my LB Homespun throw while S worked on her potholder. I have no idea why I decided to work on my throw instead of socks. Probably because I'd like to have it finished, instead of sitting on the side chair, nagging me.
Hmmm... I think I'll go eat lunch and do some chores... time is passing, and I have things I need to do today. I'll finish catching up on my blogging later. ;)

I think it' looks good! it's definitely better than my first few crochet attempts! :)
[and I think of crochet as math all the time, which I think is why I tend to read a pattern and then rewrite it in my mind as a graph... also why I like charted stitches. heh.]
Tell your friend that it's much better than my first attempts... Hooray Andrea for passing on the craft!
I think of crochet as math too, but have a mathophobic friend who reads my blog. ;)
Hey, that 's pretty decent for a new crocheter of only a few hours!!
