This plant seems way too exotic to survive a Manitoba winter, yet looks way too shrub-like to be an annual:

that plant looks like a bleeding heart (dont' quote me though). if it is, that is a perennial.
i'm sorry about your missing sock, btw. that really blows. canada post is just nasty anymore, from what i hear.
It's nothing like any bleeding heart I've ever seen... but then, common names get reused a lot.
