I took out the two screws, then tried to pry the two halves of the casing apart. They didn't want to come apart. However, the leash decided it should probably behave itself.

Ah! As good as... used. (I suspect it will still have problems retracting after being pulled to it's fullest extent... perhaps I should try to hit the break just before that happens.)
