I love this! I was looking for a pattern to use for an afghan I want to make for the family that's letting me live in their house - and what better pattern than "African flowers" when they live in Africa most of the year? I made one of the hexagons last night, to see if I could, and it's very nice. Now to determine how much yarn (and what kind of yarn) I need for a full afghan. Suggestions for something that's not too too expensive? And how do I gauge how much yarn I'll need?

When giving gifts to non-knitters, you want to stick to machine washable. (For blankets, I like machine washable anyway, since a blanket is a lot to wrestle with by hand!) You might try something like Caron Simply Soft, or another similar worsted weight acrylic. I think Roses stocks Caron Simply Soft? (They have some sort of inexpensive acrylic.) Or you can go to Michaels/Walmart and pet the worsted weight acrylics, until you find one you like.

The acrylics tend not to be as reliant on dye lots, so you don't need to worry as much about buying the right amount to begin with. But as an estimate, I try to imagine the size the item would be folded, and then stack balls of yarn to achieve that size.
