At the turn of the year, my sock yarn blanket had 46.5 squares, and I finished that square up tonight to make 47. (Yeah, not so impressive, but I'm documenting where I am so I can count yardage in Lime and Violet's sock yarn marathon.)
I have yet to figure out how much yardage a square uses.
While I'm at it, here's my other sock yarn WIPs:
(The blue triangle will be a small Clapotis.)

Beware the Clapotis! (or perhaps you knew this when you used the word "small".) I foolishly started one before xmas on size 6 needles - it is beyond gorgeous (I used cotton/rayon sport from mystical creation yarns) - but absolutely interminable (and I consider myself pretty fast), and at three feet long I still have a ways to go... on the upside the dropped stitches are super fun and break up the monotony.
Mine actually didn't take that long... although I only had two balls of sock yarn to work through. I actually rather enjoyed the knitting, once I got rid of most of the stitch markers. (I just marked the beginning and end of the repeat section, and am able to remember the pattern in between just fine.) Mine is done now, and I have some photos I need to post.
