Since J's lease is up at the end of January, we went out and wandered around a few open houses in the neighbourhood.
There was one that J could easily afford (somewhere around $250K)... but was about the size of his current living room (That's including the *entire* apartment). The outdoor space was nice... but it was *really* small.
At the opposite end, there was a rather nice one bedroom floor-through (kitchen needed rennovating, but was usable), lots of space... but at the extreme upper end of what he could afford (around $550K). Down-side (besides cost) was the graffiti on the scary front door, the crooked (although sturdy) stairs, and the general disrepair of the public space. However, there were no signs of a leaky roof.
The rest were in between in space, but nothing below $400K. And not as nice as the $550K place. There was one that was kind of nice, although small. It wouldn't be too bad if you plastered one of the tall walls with storage space and a rolling ladder.
I've always wanted a rolling ladder. I used to imagine it in a library, though... ;)
