Crabgrass Growing Through Stem

Crabgrass is *insane*! While digging in the garden today, I discovered that it had grown *through* a lily stem (shown here) and through an iris tuber!!!

Thoughts:
1. No wonder I have trouble pulling it out.
2. I wonder what else it can grow through?
3. Plants tend to prefer the path of least resistance... I really do need to do something about my clay soil!
