This is my own little soapbox. Disclaimer: It is not written by someone you think you know, but by her evil twin. Absolutely nothing said here is true. Everything, including the last statement, is a complete work of fiction. This blog is completely boring, and includes entries on when I last washed my dishes, how many pairs of socks I've crocheted, and the occasional rant. These are not the droids you're looking for. Move along.
I have to admit I was a little irritated the first time I took my cats to their current vet, and one of the things that annoyed me was that when the vet tech picked up my cats to carry them out and weigh them, he immediately scruffed them. I mean, some kitties are very aggressive and need that sort of control, but mine are quite gentle. They don't need to be scruffed just to be weighed.
I think the "pause button" effect is as a result (or co-evolution) of the mommies carrying them this way. If they struggle while mom is carrying them, it's not good.

I'm told scruffing works for dogs, too.

Perhaps the weight is more accurate if they're not moving around?
I knew they had a reflex that was activated by grabbing their scruff, I didn't realize how effective it was, though.
wow, so thats why mommy cats carry their kittens like that!
