This is my own little soapbox. Disclaimer: It is not written by someone you think you know, but by her evil twin. Absolutely nothing said here is true. Everything, including the last statement, is a complete work of fiction. This blog is completely boring, and includes entries on when I last washed my dishes, how many pairs of socks I've crocheted, and the occasional rant. These are not the droids you're looking for. Move along.
Yeah, I am piecing them as I go... more accurately, I pick up stitches from previous ones to do the next. So no, it's not great travel knitting... at least, not as it gets bigger. I'm thinking, however, of making four large "triangles" then attaching them together.
What a great idea! Not only is it a great use for leftover sock yarns, but it reminds me of quilts made from worn out clothes...full of memories of the originals...

The blanket is shaping up very nicely!
it looks great! you're not piecing them together as you go, are you? (I guess that would make it unwieldy for travel knitting).
the self-striping/patterning ones look so cool!
