Beauty And Function

I'm not sure it ever occurred to me that measuring spoons could be beautiful. Then, when I was wandering around Etsy yesterday, I found these. I *love* the Japanese cherry blossom design!

Sadly, I can't justify $57 USD (including shipping) for a set of measuring spoons. The price probably isn't outrageous when you consider that they're handmade, but still, they're just measuring spoons.

That's probably why no one else makes beautiful measuring spoons... few people are willing to pay decent money for "just measuring spoons".

I admire that the artist made them. I will keep the link, on the chance that one day I'll feel that I have extra money. Hmmm... it's only three hours of tutoring, and it's nice to have something beautiful to make up for the tedium...

Those ARE pretty! While I like the measuring spoons, I already have a very practical set from Oxo, I'd like a 1/2 tablespoon measure, and I'd prefer my measuring spoons to be dishwasher safe.

I am quite tempted by the tea scoop, though:

I wonder how much a "generous teaspoon" is?

Yes, the tea scoop is also very pretty. :) I have a great set of measuring spoons from Lee Valley:

(very functional, but not terribly pretty) but, since I don't currently have a dishwasher, handwash isn't that much of an issue.

I agree on both counts: they are totally gorgeous, but way too expensive.

I'll have you know that sent me on a cruise of Etsy (my current powers of concentration are pretty much nil, so I'm easily distracted from my grading by shiny objects) and I found many cool things.

Being a gryphon and soft-sculpture person, I especially like this...

I have to remind myself that the heart of saving money and staying in a budget is not buying too many things you don't actually need, especially since I'm having a bunch of unexpected expenses this month.

I am seriously tempted by that gryphon, and the tea spoon, and some prints, and a tree-of-life pebble necklace that I think I found in YOUR favorites, though...

(In other news, I'm sorry to hear you're down with a cold again. :-( I don't always respond to your blog posts because I'm lazy, but I do read them. :-) )

I like those Lee Valley spoons, too, although I don't generally use spice containers with that square shape.

The Lee Valley ones fit in the round spice jars too... mostly. I just tested the tablespoon in the glass McCormick container, and it doesn't *quite* fit... but the rest fit in. (Unlike those ridiculous round measuring spoons that most places seem to sell.)

Nice gryphon! I must admit I think of you every time I come across one, generally in the Flickr needle felting photo pool. :)

Don't worry about not commenting... I'm bad at that too. ;) Nice hearing from you! Sorry to distract you from your marking, especially for things that cost money! ;)
