Jello Comparison

Jello Comparison
Jello Comparison

I have a friend (who I will not name, but I think can withstand a bit of gentle ribbing) who will not eat any flavour of jello besides strawberry. I do not say "does not like", because, as far as I know, she has never tried any other flavour. For a while I tried to convince her to branch out... just a wee bit... maybe "wild strawberry"? Nope. Not happening.

So, ever since then I've been curious as to whether the two actually taste at all different.

I'm not sure they do.

They might... but if I were eating them at separate times, and you asked me which I was eating, I wouldn't have a clue. They may only taste different because I expect them to taste different, and am imagining the difference. I certainly can't describe the slight difference.

Misc.

Had fun at SNB tonight!

I've taken a bunch of project pics which I'll upload tomorrow.

Note to self: read this post on zonohedra and partial cubes again when it's not past my bedtime.

Socks

I finished another pair of socks during the meeting today... the Regia Jubilee blue socks. Whee. Now, do I start a new pair on the way home using my "school emergency stash", or find some other way to occupy myself on the way home?

I think I'll just find some other way to occupy myself on the way home. After all, I do have another pair of socks started at home, and I'm planning on catching the 5:05 G bus, which is sometimes too packed to crochet anyway. Plus, since I'm aiming for a specific bus, I'm not likely going to have a long wait time. And I can talk to V at the bus stop.

So that's what I'll do. I'll save my emergency yarn for a true "emergency" (aka a meeting/talk with no yarn), and just wait until I get home. I can always do something little with the bit of leftover Regia. (I'm thinking of a mini raglan sweater.)

I'll post some photos tomorrow, probably. I'd like to go to SNB tonight, so I probably won't bring my laptop home... I wouldn't really have time to do much on it anyway, and I don't need the extra weight. I'll post both the latest socks, and the Fleece Artist socks in progress... they're *really* pretty!

Tonight I plan to bring Weasley to SNB. The FA socks will come too, but only so that I can work on something on the bus both ways. The front of Weasley is currently packed in Sophie (I can just imagine someone reading this who doesn't know what Weasley and Sophie are ;) ), and Sophie is in the process of having her sparkly sewn on. I'm almost done, so it won't hurt her to go out on the town tonight. I'll probably finish the sewing up first before continuing on with Weasley. I'll post a photo of Sophie tomorrow too.

Grrr

Mutter, mutter, mutter.

J has talked to T, but the topic of medical was not discussed. J tends to be quite "relaxed" on requirements, but I can't afford to have him be relaxed on this! As an alien, I'm *required* to have medical insurance, or I get kicked out of the country. I want to take care of this ASAP, so that I don't have a "lapse" which makes all of my stuff "preexisting conditions"! :P

Grrr.

T said he'd e-mail J, but J is out of town until Friday.

Mutter, mutter, mutter.

Mornings on the Bus

Ah, yes... the joy of arriving at work at a reasonable hour: so many people packed on the bus that you couldn't squeak one more on with a shoehorn, and then sailing past stops full of people who are frustrated that a half dozen busses have passed them by without stopping.

:P

I wonder what the busses were like yesterday? Although it was Labour day, the university, in it's infinite wisdom, decided to hold classes. Some of the peons pointed out that not all students lived on campus. So they suggested running shuttles from the park and rides. Well, now campus people and out-of-town people are okay, but what about all the people in town? Um, okay, well... how about a Saturday schedule? Yeah... like a once-an-hour bus is really going to be sufficient. Plus, the Saturday schedule only serves half the park and ride lots. And only a fraction of the town. I decided to stay home. (I meant to work at home, but ended up sleeping most of the day. I did take a break from my naps to have ice cream with Kelli... a local place was raising funds for Katrina relief by selling ice cream.)

Yowzers! I don't know what's up, but I just developed a killer headache in my left temple!

Hmmm... I take two advil, and it disappears before the advil has a chance to do anything. Strange.

Neighbours

Shortly after my trip to Winnipeg I got new neighbours next door: a small family with one young child. I went over and introduced myself, and they seemed quite friendly. For the most part they're pretty quiet. Frequently I can hear the kid running around inside. He seems quite active. However, frequently their "conversations" sound like shouting. I have no idea what they talk about... their voices are muffled, and they speak in Chinese. I hope I'm misreading their tone, and they're just "enthusiastic" speakers, rather than angry a lot.

Eh?

Weasley Progress
Weasley Progress

For some reason, my Weasley makes me very happy. My colourwork isn't perfect, but is good enough. I certainly improved towards the top. Luckily the tweedy nature of the yarn disguises my poorer efforts.

New Dishwasher
New Dishwasher

Isn't my new dishwasher nice? Here's what it looks like inside:

New Dishwasher (inside)

Well, first thing to do is test it. Here's Friday's dirty dishes sitting on the counter:

Dirty Dishes

And here they are in the dishwasher:

Loaded Dishwasher

Look! A clean counter! A formerly rare sight around here:

The dishwasher even came with a sample of detergent, saving me from having to rush out late at night:

After dinner on Saturday, the first test:

Dishwasher in Action

Voila, clean dishes! Amazing!

Speaking of Saturday's dinner, I had a rather interesting conversation with myself during its prep:

La, la, la, I think I'll make my shrimp pasta. Yum! And I don't have to worry about the dishes! Yay! ... La, la, la, time to do the garlic. First chop the ends off the cloves... here's the knife... now, do I use a cutting board, or chop on the counter? Chopping on the counter is bad for the knife and the counter. But I hate washing cutting boards! Andrea! Remember the dishwasher! Yay! But wooden cutting boards probably shouldn't go in the dishwasher? Andrea! Use those big plastic chopping mats! But I hate washing those chopping mats! Andrea! Dishwasher! Yay! La, la, la...

Wild Kingdom

Vulture?
Vulture?

You'll never guess what I saw on the sidewalk outside my apartment. Let me give you a hint... this ain't no songbird.

(S)he wasn't too friendly, either. I set my camera to maximum zoom (not much) and slowly crept as close as I could. I took a photo every few steps. (I find this works best... that way I don't scare animals off before I get at least one photo. Then, instead of shrinking the photo for the web, I crop.) By the time I got close enough for the above photo, (s)he started hissing at me. Here (s)he is taking off:

Vulture?

And this is what (s)he was snacking on:

Roadkill?

Looks like squirrel roadkill, with a side of flies. Yum.

I'm guessing tweety must be a black vulture.

Aid

There is major budget belt tightening around here, given I'll be living off my savings this term. This doesn't leave me in a position where I feel able to donate money to aid organizations. However, they were mentioning on the news tonight that the Red Cross has a blood shortage with this latest disaster. If there's a blood drive on campus next week, I plan to donate. I *can* afford to spare some blood. Plus, I'm one of the vampire's favourite flavours. ;)

I checked the Blood Donation Eligibility Guidelines, and amazingly, with all my screwy medical conditions, I am allowed to donate.
