Company
Guess who is visiting? (And will be getting another bath this weekend!)
He needs a good brushing!!! It is just surface dust/dirt from all the dry weather we've been having. Too many baths can strip a dog's skin of the essential oils they need - giving him extra dandruff (an allergen to people) and dry itchy skin, causing him discomfort.
If you feel the need to clean him, just use plain water (hose him off if he'll let you, rather than submersing)
It's been a month since the last time I bathed him, and then I didn't do a very thorough job. You don't think a month is long enough? (He's still stinky.)
Dogs should not be shampooed (even with doggy shampoo) more than once per year. In between, if they are dusty/dirty (like what came off on your hands) they can get a "rinse" off with just water.
Some dogs are naturally stinky; wetting them can actually make that worse! Also, if his coat is thicker (and being an outdoor dog, likely is) it takes longer to dry out properly all the way, which is probably the main cause of the stinkyness.
